Everyone loves a bit of slow motion, right? There’s nothing quite as incredible as watching water balloons burst, flames breaking out or things just generally exploding at low speeds the naked eye simply can’t comprehend. Unfortunately, the equipment needed to record such footage is ridiculously expensive, so most people won’t be able to go around filming themselves eating biscuits and smashing mugs in slow-mo. Fortunately, there are people who can get their hands on such equipment for long enough to do these things for us, so we don’t have to worry about it ourselves. Two such people come in the form of the YouTube phenomenon, The Slow Mo Guys.
The Slow Mo Guys are two mates from Oxfordshire who love nothing more than arsing about with a camera which is probably more expensive than everything else they own combined, just for our viewing pleasure. They’re just about mature enough to handle this camera and manage the YouTube account professionally, but thankfully immature enough to consider doing some of the best and silliest things imaginable, and present them to the world in glorious slow-mo.
Our heroic presenters are producer, director and cinematographer Gavin Free, who has some pretty impressive experience to his name including slow motion cinematography in films such as Hot Fuzz and Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, along with his work for Texas-based production studio Rooster Teeth. At his side ever faithfully is his lance corporal friend Daniel Gruchy, who (possibly owing to his military career) provides the gonads and the knowledge to perform some of the more dangerous tasks.
Some of their videos are amazing to watch simply because they allow you to see things you would normally miss, such as this one:
While others are great because they answer questions you’ve probably thought about but never considered asking, such as popping popcorn:
And then there are the ones which are brilliant just because they’re silly, such as this one, in which they teach you the best way to make an omelette:
Their YouTube channel can be found right here. Watch, subscribe, and enjoy.
